Beyond the Code: Why I Lost My Passion (and How I'm Getting It Back)

I'm sharing how I lost my passion for development, neglected my skills and personal brand. That's why I'm starting this blog: to reignite my spark, learn from the ground up, and build a community, inviting you to join me on this journey.

Beyond the Code: Why I Lost My Passion (and How I’m Getting It Back)

Hey there! So glad you’re here! Today, I want to talk about a challenge many devs face.

If you’ve landed on this page, chances are you know my name is Marco Aldana and I’m a software developer. But today isn’t just about code; I want to share something far more personal: my journey and the crucial importance of an online personal brand.

From a young age, the worlds of programming, mechanics, and music completely captivated me. I remember spending hours playing guitar (yeah, I was probably the ‘Wonderwall’ kid). But there was also my geekier side: without knowing English or much about programming, I managed to set up video game servers and create programs by following pixelated YouTube tutorials or scouring forums like Taringa. Taking apart electronic gadgets was one of my favorite pastimes; I still remember feeling like a hero to my family when I figured out how to fix the Christmas tree lights!

Eventually, adulthood came knocking. I ventured into a technical degree in mechanical manufacturing, where I learned about design, machine tools, and materials. Later, I made the leap into Mechatronics Engineering, a phase that allowed me to merge mechanics with electronics, programming, and automation. After working in the electronic manufacturing industry, I finally landed in the exciting world of programming.

An Unexpected Detour in My Career

For years, my passions and hobbies gradually morphed into my job, largely driven by market demand. And while there’s nothing wrong with that if it’s your path, for me, it wasn’t what I initially envisioned. I focused on climbing the salary ladder until, not too long ago, I realized a few things that needed a radical change:

  • I lost my passion for learning: I limited myself to studying only what was necessary for my job. The curiosity that had driven me since childhood turned into an obligation, and that spark began to fade.

  • I accumulated knowledge gaps: By focusing solely on urgent tasks, I neglected the fundamentals. I realized I had significant holes in my learning path that needed immediate attention.

  • I neglected my personal brand and relationships: Coming from an in-person work environment, I thought having good office relationships was enough. The arrival of remote work — though I must admit I initially enjoyed it a lot — showed me how wrong I was. I lost touch, and my professional network weakened. This is absolutely detrimental to career growth! I’m speaking from experience: if I tried to switch positions or jobs today, it would be much harder than it used to be. This taught me a fundamental lesson: It’s not all about technical knowledge!

Starting Anew

I’m sure I’m not the only one who has felt this way. That’s why I’m starting this blog on my personal page today. My main goal is to reignite that passion for studying what I love.

This space is my way of getting back to basics. It’s my commitment to take charge of my learning again, to study everything from the ground up to the most complex topics, and to share it clearly and honestly. I’m doing it to have a personal reference, but also in case you want to join me on this journey—whether to learn, to be entertained, or because maybe, just maybe, you feel a bit like I do.

If this resonates with you, I invite you to join me on this journey. I hope you enjoy and find value in visiting this page as much as I do in creating it. In these times of social media and distractions, my aim is for this space to also help you focus and study better.

Feel free to reach out via email or LinkedIn if you want to chat about a specific topic, share an experience, or just say hello.

A big hug, and I wish all your goals turn into achievements!
